In the days between the great wars , when France still had its colonies in far-off Indochina,  expatriate French planters sitting on the verandahs overlooking  their plantations would sip aperitifs in the humid tropical late afternoons and relax in chairs woven from local braided raffia.  Visitors from home saw this unique furniture and impressed with its casual elegance brought the style back to Paris, where it became the rage, maintaining its popularity into the '50's.  Although pieces now occasionally can be had at fine art auctions,  raffia furniture vanished with the romantic and exotic times they represented.  That is, until now.  Raffles Indochine brings back all the romance and elegance of that bygone era, designed to suit today's homes and lifestyles and constructed to be as comfortable as the plushest upholstered furniture available.  Raffia, taken from the fronds of the raffia palm, is both soft and extremely durable.  Ours is hand braided especially for us in the tropics, treated for fire retardantcy and then woven around wooden frames.  The seats and backs are webbed for comfort unlike any other woven furniture.  As a final touch a special urethane finish protects it against accidental stains.

So, sit back, relax, pour yourself something cold and be carried off to a faraway place and time.  Close your eyes and if you hear the sound of warm rain falling on the jungle, or think you catch a glimpse of sun reflecting of a golden temple roof, we'll understand.
